Bradenton’s Downtown vision - Monday, December 4, 2006

On December 4th, the Bradenton Downtown CRA Team (Glatting Jackson, Robert Charles Lesser & Co. and Seimon & Larson) presented the principles that were going to be used over the following three days to generate Bradenton’s Downtown vision.  This framework is a product of stakeholder interviews, research, and steering committee feedback collected over the last three months.  This presentation was an opportunity to test a few concepts with the Public before beginning work on the final plan.

During lunch on Tuesday, as the designers were developing ideas, traffic solutions and implementation strategies, the community dropped by to see their progress.  Pete Sechler from Glatting Jackson was on hand to answer questions and explain the team’s vision and process.  The Public showed support by asking questions and providing comments.

Wednesday December 6th was the big event.  Mayor Poston opened the evening with a statement reaffirming his commitment to improving Bradenton’s downtown.  Next, the CRA plan was unveiled by the consultant team.  The presentation focused on the various district-specific solutions combining urban design, mixed-use development, better streets, market projections, and action strategies.  The plan combines various ‘quick victories’ with ‘long-term solutions’ that create a better connected, more walkable, more urban downtown Bradenton.  Attainable housing, public space, and the riverfront are also important points addressed by the plan.

Glatting Jackson and Robert Charles Lesser & Co - Wednesday, November 8, 2006

On November 8th, Glatting Jackson and Robert Charles Lesser & Co. presented the initial findings for Downtown by Design.  This included physical data, existing market analysis and a summary of the stakeholder input to date.  The presentation concluded with the introduction of draft theme topics that summarized many of the important issues concerning the downtown.  Following the presentation, the roughly 120 citizens that attended were broken up into 8 workgroups and each group focused on a theme.  The goals of the workgroups were to figure out if we missed any themes, figure out which strategies could lead to “quick victories” in terms of implementation and finally, what are some strategies for “longer term” solutions.  At the conclusion of these workgroups, one person from each group stood up and summarized the goals and objectives of their group.  The feedback was great and this information will lead us (GJ and RCLCO) to establish frameworks and principles for change and we will present our initial ideas at the December 4th evening presentation.

Public Kick-Off Meeting - Tuesday, October 3, 2006

Public Kick-Off Meeting - 6pm – 8pm, Bradenton Municipal Auditorium - 1005 Barcarrota Blvd., Bradenton, FL 34205.

On October 3rd, the initial kick-off meeting with the public was held.  Consultants from Glatting Jackson met with Councilman Bemis Smith in the morning, City Staff around lunch and then the 20-person steering committee and launched the “camera exercise”.  In the camera exercise, the steering committee members will take pictures of things they like, dislike and/or images of what they want Bradenton to be.

In the evening, a presentation was made and great feedback from the Public was given in a 2-hour forum. Many people addressed their concerns in Bradenton as well as the various elements that could enhance the quality of life in downtown Bradenton.  In addition to the public meeting, a few of the folks have already used the website and submitted some additional comments and concerns. Please feel free to add your comments by going to our Questionnaire page.
